StFX WorldCat Local Issues Log

Not sure which databases are indexed in Worldcat.org

Issue: It is unclear where the articles are coming from in WorldCat Local (which databases are being indexed).

Status: As of October 29, OCLC lists the following: GPO Monthly Catalog, ArticleFirst, MEDLINE, ERIC, British Library Inside Serials, Elsevier's SCOPUS and ScienceDirect collections from 2006 to the present (more than 1.3 million records). The total number of articles recorded in WorldCat.org at that time exceeded 66 million.

Multi-volume monographs don't display global call number

Issue: For multi-volume monographs, we currently have to click on "View item details" in order to see a call number.

Status: OCLC has informed me that this is how WorldCat displays multi-volume sets. It has been submitted on my behalf as an enhancement request.

WorldCat mobile now works in Canada

Issue: WorldCat (mobile edition) did not work in Canada.

Status: As of this week, it works from within Canada.

Some Marie Michael records not showing up

Issue: Similarly to the Angus L. Macdonald records, a number of the items at Marie Michael are not showing up in our Local.

Status: The Marie Michael Library is not currently using WorldCat Local, and staff are not editing their records to add OCLC numbers.

Cannot search by call number

Issue: It is impossible to search or browse by call number in WorldCat Local.

Status: Considering the nature of WorldCat (there are no call numbers in the master records -- they can only be obtained at the time of the search when WorldCat queries our Aleph databases and retrieves holding information, including the call number) it is highly unlikely that we will ever be able to search for call numbers using the Local.

'View all editions' does not list StFX editions at the top

Issue: When you click on 'View all editions' next to an item, the resulting list is chronological (most recent edition first), and there is no option to easily view the editions available at StFX.

Status: I have reported this to OCLC. As well, a number of other institutions (worldwide) have alluded to this problem on the WorldCat Local User Group listserv.

MyiLibrary eBooks not displaying when accessed from Local in IE browser

Issue: If you accessed a MyiLibrary eBook using the WorldCat Local in IE, the ebook would not display.

Status: RESOLVED. OCLC has changed the way it displays eBooks (they now open in a separate window).

We own items that are not in WorldCat

Issue: We currently have no way of displaying records in our Local if no OCLC number exists for this item (or this specific edition). This is the case for a good number of our Government Documents and Special Collections, but is not limited to these areas.

Status: UPDATE! Bill Slauenwhite has received an answer from OCLC. They have informed us that there is a process for assessing an institution's 'unresolved records' and determining if our records are admissible into WorldCat (they cannot be incomplete), and that they usually wait a little while after setup before instigating this process. This time has come for Novanet, and they will work with Bill to report which records are being added and which ones cannot.

Difficult to search for specific editions

Issue: There is no easy way to search for a specific edition of a book. Even if you click on "View all editions" those held by StFX do not show up at the top of the list, so it is not very helpful.

Status: I have reported this to OCLC and am awaiting a response. Other institutions worldwide have also reported this as a concern.

Items we own are in WorldCat but aren't displaying our holding

Issue: An item exists in the WorldCat database, but it doesn't display our holding of it, even though in Novanet it shows up.

Cause A
: Often, this happens because our Aleph record doesn't have the corresponding OCLC number in the 035 field.
Status A: Elaine Christensen is diligently trying to add these. If you encounter such a case, please send the title to her!

Cause B: We have found several instances where there are several Novanet copies of an item, but only one shows up in WorldCat Local, even though all the holdings are attached to the same bib record.
Status B: I have reported this to our OCLC contact, and am awaiting a solution.

Direct export to RefWorks

Issue: The direct export to RefWorks does not work off-campus.

Status: CBU has reported this problem on a number of occasions.

Reserve items showing up as "Unavailable"

Issue: Reserve items with the status "General Three Day Loan" or "General Three Hour Loan" were listed as "Unavailable" even when they were sitting on the shelf.

Status: RESOLVED. I'm afraid this was a manual error on my (Lise's) part. If you find other statuses that are showing up as "Unavailable" when the location shows otherwise, please report them to me.

Not clear that we want people to click on "Check for StFX Online Access"

Issue: For journals and articles, it was very confusing that you were shown links and lists of holdings, and the "Check for StFX Online Access" was way over to the right.

Status: IMPROVED. OCLC changed the display so that now this button is the first thing on the screen on the item page.

Non-StFX URLs showing up in records

Issue: Non-STFX links showing up on record page.

Status: RESOLVED. OCLC has changed the layout so that links other than those in our OPAC are by default hidden
